In the dialogue, they discussed the current situation of the cultivation of humanistic spirit in Chinese universities.  They also emphasized the importance of liberal arts education in cultivating new-era talents trained by the wisdom of the East and the West, the ancient and the new.

Professor Li Tiangang, having a good study of Shanghai culture, set the theme of his lecture for Arete Liberal Arts Forum to be "A Causerie on the unban culture of Shanghai - convergence between Chinese and western culture".  He explained how Shanghai developed from the "South Wu Zhuang County" to an international metropolis, allowing Arete students to get a deeper understanding to the unfamiliar city.
