Detail

Charles University is a modern, dynamic, and cosmopolitan institution. Its structure comprises 17 faculties (14 located in Prague, two in Hradec Králové, and one in Pilsen), four university institutes, five centres dedicated to educational, scientific, research, development, and other creative activities, four university-wide special-purpose facilities, and the Rector's Office as its central executive management unit.

The university offers a wide range of academic opportunities, with over 950 accredited study programmes. A significant number of these programmes are accredited for delivery in English.

Research is a core activity. Charles University hosts several leading research teams that engage in international collaborations. Students across faculties have opportunities to participate in the university's scientific and research activities. Academic staff contribute to major international projects, including programmes at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants. Projects funded by the Operational Programme Research, Development and Education (OP RDE) between 2014 and 2023 are documented in the university publication Ninety-nine steps into the Future of CU.

International cooperation is central to the university's strategy for enhancing its global profile and openness. Charles University pursues high standards in joint international scientific projects, actively participates in numerous prestigious international organisations and university networks, and strongly supports international mobility for both students and academic staff.

The university maintains cooperative relationships with many renowned universities worldwide and prioritizes enabling all students to undertake study stays or practical internships abroad. The Erasmus+ programme is a key mechanism for this, utilized annually by approximately two thousand Charles University students.

Charles University places significant emphasis on developing inter-university cooperation formalized through bilateral agreements. Its current network encompasses nearly 200 partner universities across all continents, including many prestigious institutions globally. This cooperation spans a wide range of activities, from joint research projects to organizing conferences, seminars, and summer schools.

The university holds memberships in several major academic alliances. These include the 4EU+ European University Alliance and the Coimbra Group. Charles University chairs the Association of Central European Universities (CE7) and participates in collaborative initiatives between the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and CE7. It is also a member of the Eastern Partnership University Cluster (EaPUC), which connects leading EU universities with top universities from Eastern Partnership countries.
